Powerful Lessons On Crowdfunding For Breast Cancer

Jennifer Hohman and Angelica Galland sit down with YouCaring.com’s Head of Storytelling

Last week, I sat down with Jen Hohman and spoke about what it’s like to receive a breast cancer diagnosis.

Jen opened up about the challenge of asking and receiving support, about the gift of vulnerability and ultimately, about how her experience with cancer is about choosing life above all else.

I learned that it was Jen’s best friend, Angelica, who inspired her to crowdfund on YouCaring. A cancer “thriver” as she calls herself, Angelica lost her home in a fire in February 2015 and used YouCaring to raise money. As soon as Jen shared her diagnosis, the vision for Jen’s fundraiser came to life.

$16,420 later, as Jen, Angelica and I sit in the Bikram Yoga studio where Jen currently teaches, I am deeply moved and inspired by these two powerful and loving women. Jen shares that she had to teach a class right after receiving her diagnosis and that it was the chance to be of service to her community through yoga that has helped keep her strong.

After crying in class one day, Jen had multiple students share that they too have battled cancer and some had done so alone and wished they hadn’t. The gift of asking for help, according to Jen and her community, is that it reminds you that you’re not alone, and that there are so many people out there waiting to help you. Anyone can raise necessary funds through breast cancer crowdfunding. Start your free campaign today.
