What’s even harder is trying to describe the techniques that work for you to a new manager who wants coaching. Generalizing tons of experience working through management challenges is hard enough, but then knowing whether or not it will work for them? A crap shoot. I found myself giving very similar advice recently, along the lines of, “It’s okay if you don’t feel like you know what you’re doing. You don’t. It takes lots of practice. Listen, empathize, and be open about your limitations. You’ll get better over time.”
