This is a great question to ask before accepting for anyone who doesn’t want to be surprised to find themselves acting as just another over represented voice. Here’s a way you can be a better ally: recommend a colleague. It stinks to think about giving up a chance to be recognized especially if there’s travel involved, but like EricaJoy mentions, if you got asked to speak that means someone likes your brain! Turning down a speaking opportunity and recommending a colleague doesn’t automatically mean you give up your spot either – I should know. After learning a conference was sorely lacking women speakers I recommended a friend and colleague to take my place. She accepted and I was still asked to speak!
