Houston city officials to offer those in need, respite from the heat
21th Sept 2015, Houston, TX, US: Seniors and disabled residents of Houston area will get much needed respite from the searing heat as The Houston Department Of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) will be distributing portable air conditioners to them.
There have been several news reports of heat wave in Houston and neighboring areas. The city has seen high temperatures this summer and it has taken its toll on the surroundings. In spite of the record rainfall in the months of May and June, city’s parks and recreation department is taking the threat of droughts very seriously. While the environs of the city are not spared by the weather conditions and the heat wave, how can the inhabitants be?
That’s the thought behind the latest initiative from HDHHS, which will be distributing 315 air conditioners to seniors and disabled people in the area. The initiative has gotten a funding $25,000 from Reliant while Harris County Area Agency on Aging, which is a division of HDHHS has offered $75,000. This money has been put to good use by the city officials who started distributing air conditioners to the needy in June this year.
The elders and the disabled suffer to a large extent because of the heat. Studies have shown that the elders take twice the amount of time as youngsters to return to core body temperatures after they have been exposed to very high or cold temperatures in outdoor settings. There are many who are vulnerable to bouts of exhaustion and heat strokes, which can be detrimental to their well being.
The unfortunate part is that there are several elders and disabled residents who have no access to Air Conditioning in their homes. They can benefit from the new scheme to a great extent as the portable air conditioners will offer them comfort during the hot summer months in Houston. Home and office owners in the city and its neighboring region also need to consider good quality Air Conditioning installation and repairs services in the area.
