We are not using the word “America” or “Americans” to talk about the US

What words do Latin Americans use to talk about people from the US?

I cringe every time I hear somebody using the word “America”.

“This is America”

“Make America great again”

“The American Dream”

“This is how we do it in America”

Ohhhhh, my god. Just stop. You are not America. You are a COUNTRY from AMERICA. You are not the entire continent.

If we are hanging out with people from the US and somebody says: “In America, while they are in Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica o El Salvador”. We just know this conversation is not going to last very long.

Saying the word “American” in Latin America is going to raise some eyebrows.

It is really arrogant to see an entire country calling themselves “Americans” when their country is called: “The United States of America” not “America”.

In Latin America, we have been pointing this out for ages and that’s the reason why we call you guys: “Gringos”. It is short, easy to pronounce, and not very welcoming.
