What do you get when you cross a hipster and a young urban professional? A Yuccie of course! Yuccies are the latest way to describe the ever-changing millennial generation workforce. It stands for “young urban creatives” and was invented by David Infante last week.
Yuccies combine the best parts of the hipster and the yuppie. They’re creative and innovative, well-dressed, and have new ideas on how to make money better and faster. Typically, they are college educated and do not follow the traditional career path. Rather, they are pursuing their dreams and passions instead of heading for the customary high paying corporate job. A lot of them fall under the #startuplife profile or sell super-niche products, like Kitten Mittens.
Not surprisingly, a lot of yuccies have found their way to Austin and made it their new home. Austin is the perfect place for a yuccie to find the latest new thing or hear about the coolest new app. Yuccies like to find new ways to make everyday errands quick and efficient. Even Buzzfeed came out with a whole listicle of everything that yuccies love.
So how do yuccies communicate with one another? Mostly through screens, whether it’s cell phones, tablets or computer screens. They talk through texts and express their feelings in 140 characters or less. Tinder became a simpler way to meet potential partners by just swiping right. Snapchat became an even more simplified form of communicating by sending disappearing selfies. Even while traveling, yuccies stay connected by using apps like YouRoam to avoid roaming bills and WhatsApp to overcome international texting barriers. Yuccies are always online and are estimated to check their smartphones over 200 times a day!
People used to hate the idea of the hipster, until mason jars and flannels became mainstream. The term yuccie may not catch on, but there is no denying that innovative thinking and technology are changing our everyday lifestyles.
