This is the only part of this otherwise excellent piece that I disagree with: implying that Nintendo took these ideas from Apple. On the contrary, it’s been the other way around: the console makers (Nintendo included) started developing social networks for gamers first, and that inspired Game Center. Nintendo had interaction between their handheld and TV consoles before the iPhone existed — most obviously with the WiiU, but all the way back to the GameCube. And it’s arguable that Apple TV remote’s design and features can be traced back to the Wiimote, which was first by several years.
