Afghanistan is about 252,072 mi² and has a population of about 34.66 million people. In the country’s capital Kabul there are about 4.635 million people. Thus an outsider who has paid no mind to the political struggles of this country would infer that the largely populated country would be modern and civilized, but that is not the case. Although this country is rich in resources it has lay prey to many “political tug of wars” and has been left in turmoil. Neighboring countries who approached as friends and foes who had no means to hide their intentions have attempted to conquest the country in endless battles. For centuries this country has had to endure struggles with their identity, because each period and each horde of invaders left its imprint on the country. Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the Mogul Conquerors of India all attempted to rule.

Since these wars, Afghan culture has been based on tribal and nomadic societies. Each region of this country has their own traditions, creating a truly multicultural nation.

Kabul has endured the most brutal atttacks having been the center of violence from the Islamic invasion to the British Indian Rule, and then to the days of communism and the Taliban reign. Bombings over the years left most ancient parts of the capital in ruins and is said to have destroyed about 40% of the homes and 1/3 of public buildings.
