How well does Twitter Sentiment Predict NFL Games?

We started doing sentiment analysis on NFL games by getting the overall average polarity of Tweets in Week 12. Last week, we really stepped it up and did an analysis on every game. This week, we’re going to continue that trend.

So far, the team with the higher Twitter sentiment has won 8 games. The team with the lower Twitter sentiment has won 11. It doesn’t seem that there’s a major predictor here yet, but we can draw some more data from the Numerical Analysis on Week 16 Sentiment.

We are pulling the Tweets and analyzing sentiment via these tutorials: Search Twitter from Your Command Line, and Twitter Sentiment Analysis.

Insights from Week 16

From Week 16 we saw that no team lost when their sentiment was more than 0.0625 higher. We also saw that the average record difference when the team with the higher sentiment won was 2.6 more wins.
