Usually, water element plays a decorative role in the architectural design. Water often appears in the landscape like the pond, waterfall and etc.

In the MIT Chapel design, water has the illumination function. This design shows the material’s other nature, reflection. The chapel was built on a pond. And the light can be reflected into the room through the cracks at the bottom of the wall.

The chapel’s facade didn’t have windows. It is the only place where the light comes from. So it breaks the traditional thoughts about the light illuminates. And there is a lamp in the center of the ceiling. Beneath the lamp, it is an altar. So the sunlight from the outside balances the artificial light and makes the pop up in the environment.

So this is a good example of the water using in the architectural design. I believe the many other natures of the water can also be considered in the design.
