In Japan, All CGM Services Get into Mobocracy When…

There are many Consumer Generated Media services in Japan. For example, Hatena Bookmark, Pixiv, and Blog services provided from a number of companies. Recently, users of note.mu are increasing.

At first, all CGM services are used as a salon by prominent intellectuals, top level creators or enthusiastic manias, along the Rogers theory. Next, sharp-sighted people among their followers reach the service to “consume”.

Diffusion of innovations

Then, followers close first-phase users have strong regards. But regard for the first-phase users of followers of second-phase users is insignificant, in many cases.

In Rogers theory:

  • First-phase users (ex. prominent intellectuals, top level creators or enthusiastic manias) are Innovators and Early Adopters.
  • Second-phase users (close followers of first-phase users) are Early Majorities.
  • Third-phase users (followers of second-phase users) are Late Majorities.

Third-phase users use to only consume without regard for writers and artists. At the time, all users can leave comments on the service or everybody mention on SNS, the service get into mobocracy.

So, Twitter and Facebook were.

note.mu is approaching the third-phase. I think that it’s a reason of some Japanese users moving to Medium. In Japan, Medium is still a newcomer.
