From the early stage of my career, I’ve been given many opportunities to work on new service development with the full process from development, negotiation, implementation to promotion. It was exciting to see my service being launched. But honestly, the concept of the product was given to me by the engineering side. I was to implement and launch. Market research or analyzing the results in any stage of pre and after service launch was not on the task. There was no PDCA cycle. As a result, the company offers way too many services, of which many were outdated long time ago.

Even more devastating, in April 2017, marketing become part of sales. The company no longer has a marketing division.

As years have gone by in such manner, no analyzing of results, I’ve been haunted by the feeling that my work has been very hazy, that I should take a step back and see the results based on data and where applicable, change or take different actions to further implement the services.
After returning from maternity leave, I’ve realized I’ve been with the company for far too long and that it is time for me to start looking for new opportunities. It was only then that I clearly realized that I’ve been doing something similar to marketing but have no concrete confidence to say that I have marketing skills. I’m confident that I can finish many tasks within the marketing role, but the door for senior level marketing position is not yet open for me. So I started reading books on marketing skills and it was then that I came across Udacity’s DMND.

Not only can I acquire the basic understanding of traditional marketing skills and adapt those thinking into my work experience, I can learn about digital marketing with hands-on practice. I can acquire the skills to monitor, track, analyze data and see what was good in the strategy and tactics, where and what needs to be changed. I can fill in the gap that has haunted me for so long. In addition, just keeping up with new channels and platforms, trends and technology that keeps popping up is very difficult but thanks to DMND, I’ve come to know many new channels and services and the course is only in its’ third lesson!

Hopefully, DMND will become a game changer for me. The skills I acquire with DMND course will not only be useful for marketing roles but will add a new layer to my career.
