Let Freedom Ring

By Kenny Mullen

Powerful definition, right? Are you really free? Everyday I wake up I try to plan towards freedom for myself and my family. We often misinterpret our great country’s policies as freedom. I’ll explain…

Land of the free and home of the brave…

I definitely agree to the second part. We have very courageous and brave troops who have served, and currently serve our country. We have bold and strong people who make up this country, but this land is not free.

When I was younger, I would ask my mother for money. She would ask me what I needed it for and what would I do in exchange for the money, teaching me trades early. I would reply, “idk” knowing that her response would be, “there’s nothing free in life.”

I believe in that. We have some unrestricted freedom, absolutely but until one can act as they want without restraint they are not free. There are so many ways that we as people are enslaved today. We are forced to do certain things as citizens and have restrictions as well. Ironically, this is the land of the free with no free land.

I can remember being recruited out of high school, having to sign some papers, LOI( letter of intent). My mother told me before signing,

Read the fine print…

I took my time and read out the contract before signing. Many people, adults, congratulated me on “signing my life away.” At the time I had no idea what they were referring to but as I got enrolled on campus, I soon realized exactly what they were talking about.

They can imprison the body, they can’t imprison the mind

Being a division 1 football player was a job, a fun one, but a job nonetheless. I was told when to be up, when to be at certain place, told what to do at those certain places, and told when I could leave. The little free time I had I tried spending doing what everyone else, teammates, liked to do. I was enslaved to a system. I had restrictions and limitations, oh, and I was under contract. One thing I never let anyone do was control who I was, or control my mind. They could tell me what I had to do physically that I had to honor under the terms and conditions I signed, but could never control my mind. I am a free spirited person, not easily manipulated.

Being a collegiate athlete was a privilege, I can admit that. But being a collegiate player was business. I was owned by my university and had I have done anything outside the lines of that contract, the contract would be void. Free education came with a full workload. For four years of my life I had to comply by someone else’s rules. In fact, I’ve had to my whole life! Am I free? Rappers Jay Z and Future made a song this summer with Dj Khaled called “I got the keys” where Jay Z wrote the lyrics,

Til’ you own your own you can’t be free, Til’ you’re on your own you can’t be me, How are we still slaves in 2016?

He made such a strong, deep subliminal message that we all need to be aware of. We need financial freedom. The economic distribution in America is unreal. This isn’t a racial issue, though certain races are more affected then others, as this is merely social (wealth) classism. I know you’ve heard the term the rich get richer while the poor get poorer, which is what’s going on in today’s world.

Discipline your mind around being a free individual. Free from evil, hurt, harm, danger, negativity, and anything being a burden or obstacle in your life. Be free to love one another and love life for the gift that it is. Feel free enough to roam outside of your horizons and restrictions that one may have. Be free to be YOU! You don’t have to be like others or be a follower, we are all meant to be leaders, like the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for not only his freedom but for the freedom of others as well. Do not be controlled and enslaved by the thoughts or actions of others, and do not be enslaved by yourself. Be free to live as you please, break the chains of this modern day slavery. Remember, freedom, the power or right to act, think, or speak freely without hindrance or restraint. I look forward to the day we break the chains singing free at last, free at last, thank God almighty I’m free at last! Let freedom ring.
