The time of creation happened to be during the industrial revolution, so some people presumed that the hazy feeling in the painting was caused by air pollution. However, some objected, because as early as before the industrial revolution, the paintings had a hazy feeling, and Monet suffered from cataracts in his later years, which also partially affected his vision.
