Beas River at Manali

It was rather pleasant to be here in June when the rest of the States in the Country are witnessing early monsoon showers. It was nearly a 60% hilly drive all the way towards Manali. If you have a motion sickness or a nausea, better to have a light breakfast as the roads from Shimla towards Manali will only get more curvy at the beginning of your Journey. A dangerously magnificent view of the River Bias caught our attention soon as we were a few miles away from Kullu, a small town near Manali. White water river rafting is one of the famous water sport being played by tourists visiting Manali and soon we started to realize why the water was called white. The weather began changing it’s course gradually and it soon started becoming colder and even more colder. All throughout our journey, the Beas waters continued giving us a good company. We enjoyed the human settlements across the River and amid the beautiful mountains. It was a long day long journey and the Sun was almost on it’s way to go down beyond these mountains. I had a casual look outside the hotel balcony which I booked from Best Hotel Booking Site. I heard a distant noise which soon turned out to be a music; one that was the best I had ever heard in my life. It was a distant sound of the dangerously beautiful river Beas cutting the silence of the night. This was the beginning of our most memorable moments at Manali. This river while fulfilling the thirst of many local travelers, also quenches the thirst of the fields of Punjab and Pakistan before flowing into the Arabian Sea. Thr river emerges from a cavern at the Rohtang pass and assume different identities as the seasons go by. The name Rohtang is a new one, the old one being Bhrigu Tung. On the South of this pass lay the civilized state of Kullant ( Kullu ), while to the North lay the more desolate and barren areas of Lahaul and Spiti. Both these areas were not connected and according to legend the people prayed to Lord Shiva to make a way. Lord Shiva with his trishul cut the Bhrigu Tung mountain and made a path that is known as the Rohtang pass. On the right of this pass lies the source of the river Beas also known as Beas Rishi. Mahabharta, Maharishi Vyas, meditated. To the South of this source lies another source known as Beas Kund. Both these mountain streams meet at Palachan village, 10 km. North of Manali to form the river Beas. In ancient times the river was not known as the river Beas but as Arjiki and till the time of the Mahabharta this remained its name. The world famous tourist resort of Manali is situated on the right banks of the river Beas. The total lenght of this river is 460 km.
