FAMOUS RIDGE

RIDGE is the famous tourist attraction Located in the heart of Shimla. The Ridge is the hub of all cultural activities of Shimla. Surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan peaks and green pastures, Shimla also has a range of charming markets and places to visit for shopaholics. From the local’s favourite Lakkar Bazaar to the ever-popular Mall Road, Shimla. Most major places of Shimla like Lakkar Bazaar, Mall, Scandal Point, Jakhoo hill, etc. are connected through the Ridge. The main water supply of Shimla comes from the huge water reservoir that is located in the Ridge. The Ridge is famous for the various government functions and fairs that are held here. It is usually the venue for all such celebrations and events. The most famous festival that is held at the Ridge is the Summer Festival. This famous festival is held during the months of April or May and the whole of Shimla comes alive with colors and a riot of activities.

Christ Church

The most famous landmark of the Ridge is the Christ Church.This is the second oldest church in North India, and is one of Shimla’s most-visited landmarks.This beautiful building is constructed in Neo-Gothic style of architecture. It is a famous tourist attraction of Shimla and should be visited when you come to Shimla.

Jakhu Temple

Jakhu is derived from Hindi word Yakhsa. Yakshas are the mythological character in Hindu mythology, who are a link between human and gods. The original dates of temple is not known, but it is believed to be existing from the times of Ramayana, a pre-historic event as per ancient Hindu texts. The Jakhu hill is the highest peak around Shimla, and is famous for its trekking options. The Jakhu hill offers excellent views of sunrise, sunset, mountains and town. The hill is full of narrow paths and roads which are an enjoyable walks.

Jakhu temple has an interesting legend behind it. It is said that a deadly arrow injured Lord Rama’s brother Lakshmana when he was fighting the battle with the demon king Ravana. A priest diagnosed Lakshmana and said that he needed a particular Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas to cure Lakshmana. Hanuman was sent to get that herb from he lofty mountains. Upon reaching the Himalayas, Hanuman couldn’t make out as to which herb was the Sanjeevani. So he dug up the entire mountain and flew back to where Lakshmana was lying injured.

After Lakshmana was cured, Hanuman went back to place the mountain in its original site. He rested on top of the Jakhu hill for sometime. It is said that the top of the hill got flattened due to Hanuman’s weight! The temple has been built around the place that is supposed to have the footprints of Hanuman. . It is a highly revered religious place of Shimla and devotees throng in huge numbers to pray.

State Museum

The Himachal State Museum was established in the year 1974 and is located near the Shimla railway station. The main aim behind setting up this museum was to conserve the history, tradition and vivid culture of Shimla. Here various artifacts are preserved and displayed like the antique books, coins, paintings, jewelries and splendid handicraft items. There is a different section in the museum where beautiful Himachali dolls and toys are exhibited. This particular section is quite a hit, particularly among the little kids.

Tara Devi Temple

The Tara Devi Temple is perched a top a hill at a height of 1,851 metres above sea level. The Tara Devi Temple is located at a distance of 11 km from Shimla on the Shimla — Kalka National Highway. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara and stands on Tara Devi hilltop between Shimla and Shoghi and is a very popular visiting spot for tourists and devotees.

The temple was built over 250 years ago and holds a great spiritual value for devotees. There is a belief that Goddess Tara was brought to Himachal Pradesh all the way from Bengal. To one side of the Temple you can see the beautifully snow-capped Himalayas and the town of Shimla while on the other side you can see the tremendously green and beautiful plains that spread out vastly between the mountains.
 There are two ways to get to the temple. You can both walk the 4 km distance from the national highway and enjoy the peaceful view and the scenery of the mountains while walking and for those of you not used to walking or have difficulty, you can drive from Shoghi, which is 6 kms from the temple.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Tara Devi Temple is during the Shardiya Navaratras and Ashthami which takes place during Dussehra, when there are big celebrations held in honor of Goddess Tara. A fair is organized during this time, and people from all over the country come to pray and pay their respects to the goddess.

Tara Devi Temple is fit to visit all year round except for the rainy season between July and August. December and January aren’t ideal either because the snow fall makes it difficult to trek up or drive up to the temple.

Timing

The timing to visit the Tara Devi Temple is between 7:00 am and 6:30 pm.

Shimla Kalka Railway

The Shimla Kalka Railway built to connect, the summer capital of India in 1903 at an altitude of 2076 meters offers a panoramic feast to experience the grandeur of the picturesque Himalayas from the shivalik foot hills at Kalka to several important points The route winds from the Himalayan Shivalik Hills foothills at Kalka to several important points such as Shimla, Summerhill, taradevi, Totu, Kandagath, Solan, Barog, Dharampur and Kalka

Another tunnel at Taradevi, cutting through a hill on the peak of which is a famous temple, tells of the local superstition of the day that the Goddess would never permit it’s construction. When construction was half through, great excitement arose from reported sightings of a huge serpent in the tunnel that had emerged to stop the work. Anti climatically the reptile turned out be a long iron pipe running along the tunnel to convey fresh air.

Railway runs through 102 tunnels, some of which have hoary tales to tell. For instance, the longest tunnel at Barog, named after the engineer in charge of construction, bears the blood of it’s creator who apparently committed suicide after making a mistake in laying the alignment. This tunnel is 1143.61 meters long and remained the second longest tunnel on Indian Railways for a long time.. It is a straight tunnel, passing through fissured sand stone
