Even though there isn’t a separate paper for Vocabulary in IELTS, enhancing your grammar and vocabulary could help you achieve that 7+ Band. It’s a misconception that only a speaking test requires a thorough learning of grammar and vocabulary, for there’s vocabulary all through the test — in all its sections, requiring you to master vocabulary and grammar.

It is essential to have a solid vocabulary to understand the context of the questions in all the parts of IELTS test — whether Reading, Listening or Speaking and writing, furthermore, you even need to have a good grasp at grammar and vocabulary to answer the different sections of the test. You don’t want to write/speak words out of context and or words that are repetitive.

There are tutors who advise learning and memorizing IELTS Academic Word List –AWL, which is a list of high-frequency words, used in all the tests of the IELTS. Indeed you should have an awareness about these words and learn to use them in your daily speaking and writing, however, DO NOT merely limit yourself to this list. A candidate applying for IELTS should have a wide range of vocabulary. Watch English movies, TV series, English News, read English newspapers, books, magazines, listen to your favourite English radio show/program, listen to English songs, pick up any or all of these that makes learning worthwhile and interesting. This will help you learn effectively. Learning new words is not an only goal; the goal is to understand the context/situations in which these words are used. It is then that you’ll be able to smartly and easily use the rich vocabulary you possess in your Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking test of IELTS. Make a list of the words learnt and use them in different situations and context in a sentence. Keep reviewing these words.

The next essential thing is to learn topic related vocabulary. There is a list of common topics in IELTS test, which are covered in either or all parts of the IELTS test. These topics range from education, fitness-diet, to crime, work, Information Technology, Science, Environment and The Arts. A candidate should read or listen to these topics from various sources and learn topic related vocabulary. Besides learning topic related vocabulary, it is even more essential to be able to collocate words. You don’t want to learn and use the new words in isolation. You should have knowledge of how and with which other words these words can be used.

The next vital tip is to avoid using a general language. Each topic that is given, each question to be answered will be based on a topic, hence, one has to answer in words that aren’t general, but are topic specific. Using topic-specific vocabulary makes a significant effect on your writing and speaking.

Not enough can be said on “how to learn vocabulary”, for once you think you have a wide range of it, or even if not, you may want to get a guidance on taking the entire IELTS examination process, and, in that case, is advisable for you to seek guidance from classes/centers specializing in IELTS coaching in Ahmedabad.
