A New Wave of Adult Animation: New Projects from American Animation Studios Inbound!
Animation has been a positively growing medium throughout the years. Such is shown by the rising trend of Japanese animated-related content appearing more frequently in videos, or how both “Frozen II” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” are among the top 20 highest grossing theatrical films! This includes adult animations, or as Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen explains, adult animation is “a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for.”
During a Friday panel at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market, where Ouweleen, along with Suzanna Makkos, EVP, original comedy and adult animation at Max and Adult Swim, and Peter Girardi, EVP, alternative programming for Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) teased their upcoming shows. Ouweleen states that these shows are for multiple generations, and can be “rewatchable” and can “travel globally.” These shows include another season of Bill Lawrence, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s “Clone High” and Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal.” Along with new seasons, there will be two new Warner Bros. Animation projects: James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC animated Max series, “Creature Commandos”, and an adaptation of Joel Rose and Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel, “Get Jiro!”, for Adult Swim. Ouweleen’s mission is to use animation’s ability to speak across generations and advance the artistic medium, as “the challenge of that is making it a success.”
