Experience about In person drop

Recently I have found the advertisement for Lecturer position at a Private University and my mind eventually click to the concept of going #extramile. So i decided not only to apply online but for an in person drop too.

There was no job description just a relevant subject candidate required for the job. I have started research on the University and Heads of Human Resource Department, Chairperson, Vice Chancellor of the university. After a lot of research I was only able to find out Director Placement Bureau and other key person but no other HR executive or anyone even on the LinkedIn. I found something really interested about the University so I made it as a basis and worked on cover letter and customized resume.

I was pretty much concerned that I don’t have a prior experience in the teaching so what if they did not facilitate me. Despite all these I made myself determined to write effective cover letter and go for in person drop. I applied online through email.

I have wrote an effective elevator pitch in which I was showing passion in a way that

“I always wanted to start my career as a Lecturer”.

I went to the University and tell the guard I am here to apply for a job so he guided me towards Placement Center. I was somehow nervous but I gathered my courage and went to the department. An employee asked me with whom you want to meet I tell her I am here for in person drop of my resume and cover letter. She said you can hand it over to me. I said I want to meet the concerned person. She referred to me a miss who was senior HR person at there. I greet her with a smile on my face and started my elevator pitch. She told me as you are still in your final year you can apply after completion of your degree as per HEC requirement.

She complimented with a sentence

“We really need people like you in our team, your passion and energy shows you have been made to teach”.

I thanked her and came back. After coming back I have wrote a detailed thank you note and I was pleased to see the response.

Experience:

I have learned from this activity that we have to be fully equipped with determination and ready to meet with failure as well. This activity made me to realize going #extramile works and it made us different and unique from others.

Going for in person drop shows our passion and that is true we have more chances to get the job or anything we want to achieve.

Going for in person drop gave me realization that how is the environment actually where I am applying and either I am fit for it or not and I came to know more about the team that how they work. It made me familiar with most of the employees at the job place and now there is more chance that they will give me leverage while shortlisting candidate. Going #extramile will never lead to failure but significant outcomes, this is what I have concluded from the activity.

Challenges:

I was able to find about only 1 Director Placement Bureau and Chairperson, Vice Chancellor but no other HR persons even on LinkedIn and I was so surprised by this. I have planned to call the receptionist and asked him about the names of HR person and asked some other important things that the concerned person is available tomorrow or not.

I will do the same next time applying for any job as I did for this activity, it helped me a lot. But for a different organization I will write more effective and catchy cover letters as well as elevator pitch.

Suggestion for others:

I want to advice all the serious job seekers to put their effort in going #extramile and after applying online must go for in person drop as it made a candidate more clear about

  • The environment
  • Culture
  • Kind of people you are going to interact

Also it makes you prominent for the HR person and if you have presented yourself well they will give a chance definitely. It makes your 80% chances for the job. For every job there is thousands of applicant and almost everyone will apply online but if a person go for in person drop he will be considered unique and more passionate applicant.
