Yes people come together to reach goals. The question here is what type of goal?

  1. If the goal is value creation, then people are just means: I need people to work and create more value. What people dream of, what they want is not important as long as they create value. In this case, we care about people because we need them to create value. We make them happy to be more productive. The real goal is value creation. But such a model doesn’t work because people realize that they are just being manipulated. Nobody wakes up in the morning to create share holder value (or customer value or for the career of a manager, etc.).
  2. I think that only goals that are related to people make sense. You, me, anyone need to help others, to serve them in a way or another. Only goals that serve people make sense. Value creation is a means for such a goal. We need to bring value to a customer in order to get money to pay for suppliers, workers, tax, shareholders etc. But this is not the goal. It’s only a means to reach a higher goal, to make a difference in the world.
