Build. Create. Innovate.

On Saturday, 29th June, 2019. ALC4.0 Niger held their Meetup1.0 which was supported by GDGMinna, ParitieHub, Minna TechMeetup, w4Tech and DSCIbbul, it was a very wonderful and amazing meetup in Minna, Niger State of Nigeria (North Central).

Registration Point

Registration started around 9:30am.

Registration on going at 10:00am

The event commenced exactly 10:30am where Aliyu Aboubakar gave a keynote speech, welcoming all the participants and telling them what ALC is all about and the purpose of ALC4.0.

The Andela Learning Community is a network of technologists and tech enthusiasts across Africa dedicated to learn how to use technology to build solutions, their goal is to provide an ever-growing population of aspiring technologists with the resources and environments they need to become world-class problem solvers.

Google, Andela and Plurasight have partnered to help you take your skills to the next level. Google and Pluralsight provide you with access to pluralsight technology skills platform with three skills development track: Android, Mobile Web and Google Cloud while ALC will help you through your process.

He also introduced the tech communities that supported the meetup as mentioned above.

After the keynote, the Meetup was split into three working groups(Android, Mobile-Web and Cloud).

Jeremiah Jacob in Android Session

Jeremiah Jacob and John Kolo introduced basic Android Development starting from the layout to types of view, discussed about front-end and back-end, Knowing the Android studio system requirements and specification and guided some participants towards installing the Android SDK. They also shared resources for android development based on the pluralsight contents and encouraged those who are not on the ALC scholarship not to feel discouraged by sharing some offline courses to start practicing and building projects.

During the Android SDK installation process

Abdullahi Cap, Musa Musa and Peter Ejiga leading the Mobile-Web Specialist Track.

Abdullahi Cap for Mobile Web

They introduced the basic things about Mobile-Web such as languages (HTML5, CSS and JavaScript), Frameworks (Angular, Node.js, jQuery), side technology (Git & GitHub) and other stuffs (Semantic UI/UX, Relational Database). How to use their editors (VS Code, Atom) and browsers (Chrome). During the session, there are significant number of newbies who were given hands-on introducation to web development, so Abdullahi Cap had a codelab on HTML5 and CSS, Musa Musa on JavaScript base on the plurasight contents and Peter Ejiga talked on other side technologies.

During the Mobile-Web Codelab, participants were following up, some were able to deploy their first app and proceeded in learning JavaScript.

People respond to people who want to do more than just to gain for themselves.

Mal. Kawu A. Abdullahi,

A Lecturer from Computer Science Department, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, Niger State (IBBUL) well known technologist, Mentor and a Researcher also emphasized on the application of JavaScript and it’s framework.

He also did a codelab on JavaScript using w3schools resources. The participants were very happy during the codelab as he took the lab so low to their level(newbies) of understanding and plead with them to seek for help and guide with the LCAs.

Memunat Manzuma spoke on Cloud Engineer Foundation, she introduced the basic things all ALC4.0 Learners on Cloud Track should know such as Learning technology in the information age, what programming is all about, what Cloud actually means and its technology, Google Cloud Platform, how Git works, Software Engineering and how to use plurasight effectively and practice frequently in order to build solutions.

Cross Session Photo

Meanwhile as the sessions was captivating physically, so also it was trending online.

Everybody was Tweeting, sharing their experience about the meetup on Twitter. This resulted to our hashtag #ALCMinna #alcminnafourpointzero becoming the number 1 trending topic in North Central and 3rd in Nigeria.

Actually, ALC4.0 do not support this event officially due to the low number of shortlisted participants in Niger State, so some tech communities mentioned earlier took upon themselves to support the event and help the learners get on track.

WooooW! To Our Greatest Surprise.

We had very large turnout of participants with passion, highly motivated, willing to improve their skills technically and solve humanity’s problem. We had the three track sessions (Android, Mobile-Web and Cloud) successfully.

We believe, it’s not always how far but how well NOT by the quantity but quality of product. We in Niger State believe that we are in best position to change the world.

Therefore, the next meetup will be more Interesting, Educative, insightful and hope to see participants progressing on their projects.

Steve Jobs said and i quote:

Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me, what matters to me is going to sleep feeling like we’ve done something wonderful.

Finally, to end the Meetup, Content Curator and GDG Minna Co-organizer, Bright Emeka, gave a closing remake of the event. He also shared some stickers and thanked the audience for their attendance and participation.
