“You can’t really say Garland was a compromise” isn’t entirely the case though.

Obama could have appointed someone younger, or significantly more liberal, or someone who didn’t have the adulation of some prominent members of the GOP. It was a compromise in the sense that Obama picked someone with Republican preferences in mind, in place of just his own.

The Republicans could have offered the same, a moderate conservative between Kennedy and Roberts, but they instead chose to pick someone between Alito and Thomas.
