At the start of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ there is an odd sequence of Tom Holland thanking you for seeing the movie in theaters “as it was meant to be”.
Even as a Marvel fanboy seeing it opening weekend, I understood the need for the additional pat-on-the-back. Movie theaters are hilariously more expensive and less comfortable than streaming etc, and the odds of me ever seeing ‘Valerian’ in theaters were exactly zero from the second I saw the first trailer.
I may yet stream this movie on some godforsaken late evening (and fall asleep half way through) but the economics of that for Besson and co. will be brutal. I am personally more curious how much this movie will lose at the box office than how good it is.
