Are Millennials really so terrible at work?

Over the past week, I have heard from friends and colleagues alike — just how terrible Millennials are in the work place. Read an article on NYPost stating that Millennials are highly demanding without even having contributed something significant to the world.

From a scientific standpoint, it simply do not make sense how a generation of better fed, better educated and better exposed individuals could be labelled as “the strawberry generation”. Having been in the workforce for some time now, these are my observations and deductions.

  1. “Millennials change job faster than me changing my curtains.” — Older generations do not seek to understand this generation and many view this generation as a potential threat. Unlike Generation X, who enjoyed much of the growth and booming times in the 70s and 80s, the stability and certainty vaporize post 90s due to globalization. If these baby boomers and Gen X are as good as they claim they are. Welcome to the New World Order.
  2. “Millennials think they know best.” — This is due to their parents (ie: previous generation folks) telling them the sky is the limit and given the whole generation a sense of misplaced entitlement. On the up-side Millennials are generally a bunch of confident folks who has the courage to start out and create something new. Rather than focus on the negative, Millennials contributed to the largest number of new startups/ventures in the entire of human history.
  3. “Millennials are irresponsible and lazy.” — I have worked with many of them and I have to say I have yet to come across someone who fits that description. I think it boils down to statistics. If you cannot trust a Millennial to deliver, then do not hire them. If you did hire them and they turn out as such, blame yourself for the hiring decision. Statistically speaking there should be 35–40% of people in every generation falling under this category. Not everyone is hardworking in this world.
  4. “Millennials are forever stuck at the age of 8 — in constant wonder. Personally, I TRY to be in constant wonder, although it gets tiring. But as a Millennial you have to constantly push yourself against your personal boundaries. I fear stagnation. Sure, we can settle into our comfort zone and impose our will onto the world — but sadly, that is not how the way the world works anymore (Hint: Baby boomer). We have to take the phrase “Live and learn” literally. Period.
