Deploying High Available Oracle Database in Oracle Cloud
Oracle Database provides high availability and scalability using its software component — “Oracle Grid infrastructure”. The demand for high available systems keeps on increasing and all most all business critical applications needs 24 X 7 X 365 Days up-time for their business applications. So system should be designed high available at all layers of applications. One of the main layer of application is Back end Database and having the high available database is the major challenge organization face, one of the main challenge for organization is cost. The cost of procuring Oracle RAC License, next cost of implementation and then cost of maintain that cluster will be a good amount of $$$$$$$.
To overcome all these challenges Oracle has an excellent offering through its Database Cloud Service, any enterprise organization can have their High Available Database up and running using the Oracle Database High Available Cloud Service.
Traditional approach of Implementing Oracle High available Database:
Buy Licenses — You need to buy licenses based on cores
Buy Hardware — Oracle Real Application cluster requires atleast two servers, Network Switches, Shares Storage (SAN/NAS)
Implement RAC — Here you need at least three technical resources
1- OS and Storage Admin
2- Network Admin
3- Oracle RAC DBA
In this article we will see how simple we can deploy a High Available Database using Oracle Database Cloud Service.
Step-1 : Get your subscription and user credentials
Step-2: Login to Oracle Cloud account
Step-3: Open Service Console
Currently there is no service is configured.
Step-4: Create Service
Here it will provide you options for creating your database Service. On the same screen we can select the version of the database you want to deploy, edition of Database and Type of Database — Here we have selected “Enterprise Edition Extreme Performance” and “Database Clustering with RAC”
Step-5: Provide Database Configuration Details
On this screen we can select name of the datatabase, Timezone, DB character set, backup configuration etc.
Verify the database service configuration
Service Console listing the recently create HA database Service
Once you click on Service name it will list you the Public IP’s and other infrastructure configuration.
Step 6: Connect Database Servers using SSH
We can connect to Database server using any supported ssh tool. Follow the step in the below screens to configure and enable SSH connectivity

Step-7: Connecting to Database on both nodes as sysdba
Step-8: Connecting to ASM Instance
Step-9: Check the Oracle CRS Services
So create a High Available Database using the Oracle Cloud Database Service is just on clicks and it doesn’t requires cluster installation skills as compare to the traditional approach. But all traditional cluster management commands you can use it for managing this High available Database.
Traditional Cluster deployment requires multiple SME’s to work collectively. So in this article we have see how simple is it to deploy a high available Database in Oracle Cloud Environment.
