In order for Jedi to get their lightsabers. They had a train with a practice saber. These weren’t lethal but could hurt if hit against you. Once old enough, the padawans would go to the planet of Illum to obtain a kyber crystal. From there, they would craft their lightsaber on their own. They would get access to different paths and build a design that would reflect who they are, and more often than not to resemble their master’s saber, as a sign of respect.
If you were looking to buy a lightsaber through the black market, the options were a lot more limited. Often you’d get what you get, and that’s all there is.
Lightsabers in the black market could often cost around 3000–5000 credits ($4300– $7200 USD). Although these prices are known to have skyrocketed during the Clone Wars era.
