In general, I see your point (I find having only a single monitor can be particularly helpful while writing). In practice, I wholly disagree, especially when doing web-development, which ultimately requires anywhere from 3–4 windows open simultaneously in a near-maximised state while working:
I agree that for most tasks, mastering virtual desktops is superior to having your work spread out through multiple monitors. These days, my extra monitor is just gathering dust.
