Show Don’t Tell
“ Show don’t tell” , this sentence defines the whole concept of storytelling . If you want to capture your audience attention, you should show them not tell them. This strategy is applied in social media as well. visuals are always the key to market, success, and grab the follower’s attention. Visuals includes; Videos, photographs, quote images, infographics, & memes. Long written posts and captions are not catchy to viewers anymore; of course, there is still till these days a category of followers who would stop and read; but if you want to increase clicks and you want followers to pause at your post, you should include visuals. As per to Jesse Mawhinney in his article 42 Visual Content Marketing Statistics You Should Know in 2017, “ Tweets with images receive 150% more retweets than tweets without images”. Whereas in Facebook, “ Posts with images see 2.3x more engagment than those without images”, as stated in Social Media Today.
Show don’t tell is the central concept of posting in Instagram and Snapchat, that is why alot of people shift to these two platforms when they were established. Moreover, statistics show the high numbers of active users who emerged to these platforms. In 2016, snapchat users watch 10 billion videos per day and share 9000 photos per second, ( Frier, Snapchat Passes Twitter). However, Instagram recorded 800 million active users in September 2017 as shown in the chart (Statista).
There are several reasons that explains the importance of visuals and the strong impact of them comparing to texts. Firstly, it is a human nature that human brain processes images 60,000 faster than texts, so graphics stick easily to our brains ( Foster, Importance of Visual Elements). An old age saying, “ One picture worth thousands of words”; let’s think about it if you post an image then wrote a long caption below it, it will take a follower a while to understand and proceed the information in his/her brain. However, if you summarize it in a creative visual — photo or video — it will be easier to understand and remember.
Back to human nature, it is the predominance in the visual memory.Brands and Advertisements agencies took this into consideration to engage visuals in their social media marketing strategies. Visuals help followers to get in mood and understand the brand. Therefore, posters are being creative in their posts by being consistent in their images to build their identity. For Example, in Instagram, posters are trying different styles to create a mood boards in their accounts by posting a series of visuals that the same them and color or apply a specific rythme of posts.
To conclude, if you want to be attractive and influential whether in your personal account, or your business one. You have to choose the right visuals and study well how to use them, so you can build up a mood, and a memorable experience for your followers. Be smart in telling your story, it is much easier to write 100 words but very few who gift their time to read to read these words. However, it is not hard to take more time to convey these 100 words in a unique image that more people will interact with.
