SR&ED Hurts Canadian Innovation
Wilkins Chung

The thing that frustrates me the most about SR&ED claims is that most are aren’t actually experimental. Somewhere along the line somebody decided that “programming = science” and therefore any company writing code is doing experimental development. A billing system is not science. User accounts, profiles, marketing, signup flows, on-boarding, accounting, photos, sharing, etc, etc are not science. Its hard to claim, hard to file for, and unpredictable because 9 times out of 10 its not actually science.

The government’s expectation is that the scientists doing the experimental work fill in the SR&ED claims. It was never designed to require accounting consultants. It shouldn’t be that hard to write down what experiments you’ve been working on if you’re actually doing science. But if you’re not actually doing science fuck ya its hard. And paying 20% probably also seems pretty fair…
