I am conflicted about personalized and algorithmic advertising.

I think about this stuff all of the time, too. It is upsetting to think that in the future, we may live in a world in which our own ability to determine what’s best for us is outpaced by that of an algorithm. It is also possible, however, that there will some black swan event, say, a collective humanist rebellion (humanism as defined by the worship of the human being as the most sacred thing that exists) against algorithms and their deterministic tendencies. It could also be that algorithms will simply continue to give us better and better options, and that they will never “take over”, rather just coexist with us and improve the human race immensely. Whatever happens, data will become more and more vital. The biggest questions in the future will be surrounding its collection and its use.
