I’ve been wanting to write about this topic for awhile now however, it’s touchy subject matter makes it difficult to discuss. And that’s not just because of social media, pretty Victoria Secret models or tanned, muscular men.

For me it was having to compare myself to perfection, because who’s “perfect”?

The “perfect body” is a term that’s changed shapes throughout history; for women it’s been corsets, Flapper girls, and the “Twig look” in the 1960’s. Where as men dealt with lean, chiselled Greek gods, Macaronis (1700's), or icons like Charles Atlas; the man who started the first Fitness movement and began trends for men to build their physiques.

With a perfection-focused society where ads, movies, and magazines encourage the utmost attractive body types. It’s not hard to believe that men and women can often find themselves plagued by body insecurities.

People have altered their views on what is perfect based on factors like fashion, food accessibility, and popular culture. Also different parts of the world have distinct views on what the “perfect body” means; in China where pale skin, slim figures, a diamond face-shape is considered beautiful.

In the past couple years perceptions are changing; women on media platforms are promoting plus-size models. People like Dr. Daniel Sheypuk; who was the first ever disabled model to appear in New York Fashion week . And the hashtag #INMYSKINIWIN, a movement started by an albino male model; Shaun Ross.

Now many people are embracing the new love your body movement.

Body positivity is all about moving forward in a world where everyone can live with their body as they please and receive the respect they deserve.

People come in all shapes and sizes thereforew, it’s impossible for the “perfect body” to be real, because it’s simply inhuman. Our unique individual characteristics, things that may seem insignificant, are actually the most attractive parts of us.
