How to Improve Your Clarity of Speech

Why should you do diction exercises?

Because your speech content may be great, you may look fantastic but unless your audience can UNDERSTAND what you’re saying, your message is lost.

If you mumble a lot when speaking or find that people don’t understand a lot of what you are saying, you can take steps to improve your clarity of speech. Whether you have to give a speech, have a job that requires you speak publicly, or simply want to improve your overall speaking patterns, there are several methods you can employ to speak more clearly.

Control your breath.

Don’t rush when speaking.

Know what you are going to say.

Repeat words that are hard to say.

Pay attention to tone.

Now try to recite something out loud. It could be a speech you’re preparing, a book, or even your favorite movie quote. While you’re doing this, focus more on using your vocals (think of using your throat) more than using your tongue against your teeth. Go as SLOW as you need to, annunciating as best as you can on every word. You’re going to sound ridiculous and that’s totally fine. Do this for a couple of minutes.
