I wanted my son to be anything but a writer. He outsmarted me.

Oh, what a beautiful and thoughtful essay!! No parent wants to be fodder for angsty writing or even for comedy, yet ALL parents eventually are, no matter what we do? I put the question mark there because I sincerely don’t know. emailing him now, when he’s an adult, means the world to him, I’m guessing, somewhere deep below, even farther below than where material for writing comes from….somewhere in that core of confidence that makes the foundation for everything else. A lot of kids, I’m guessing….maybe even other writers, comedians, artists….never get such apologies from their parents or the building blocks for that confidence. Thank you for sharing this!
