Right, these kids obviously are poor because they’re stupid. It couldn’t have anything to do with thirty years of “trickle-down” economics, a minimum wage that is a cruel joke, systematic racism, urban blight, or the fact that they’re brown.

Every student in the public schools in America should have the same shot as the rich kids do. Dumbing down the schools because people are poor is the wrong idea. Instead, we should change the completely insane funding model we currently use, of funding the schools through local property taxes. This ensures that affluent (read: white) areas have more-adequately funded schools and the poorer (read: brown) folks have schools riddled with mold and leaks.

People aren’t poor because they’re stupid. They’re poor because they haven’t had the opportunities that many of us take for granted.
