On May 15th 2024, Microsoft, a global leader in technological advancements and the creator of the popular gaming platform Xbox has announced its latest breakthrough in partnership with ByoWave, a well-known peripheral company. They have revealed the Proteus Controller, a revolutionary “snap and play” kit that is set to redefine the gaming experience. This new product has been specifically engineered to cater to the needs of gamers with disabilities. By considering the unique needs of this group, Microsoft and ByoWave are setting new standards in inclusive gaming, thereby ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities, can enjoy the immersive world of video games.

The Proteus Controller, priced at $299, is a modular controller that allows for a high degree of customization to meet individual gamers’ unique needs. One of the standout features of the Proteus Controller is the “snap and play” function, which offers unprecedented flexibility for gamers. This feature enables over 100 configurations and LED variations, transforming the gaming experience for those with disabilities. With faceplates that include buttons, a directional pad, and analogue sticks, players are given the freedom to create diverse configurations to suit their gaming style and needs. Designed with user-friendliness in mind, the Proteus Controller requires no additional steps for installation. It is instantly compatible with PCs and Microsoft’s Xbox devices, eliminating the need for finding and installing specific drivers. The controller is equipped with a USB-C charging cable and a Bluetooth dongle and includes conventional gamepad-style left and right handles. The Proteus Controller is now available for pre-order on ByoWave’s website for $255 for those excited to embrace this advancement in accessible gaming.

In addition to the Proteus Controller, Microsoft announced upgrades to its $99.99 Xbox Adaptive Controller. This upgrade will enhance the controller’s compatibility with various accessories, allowing each USB port to support up to 12 buttons, a secondary stick, and a hat switch. Microsoft declares that this firmware upgrade will be available to Xbox Insiders in the forthcoming weeks and to the general public in several months.

As a demonstration of their ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility, Microsoft also declared that players can now utilize their mouse and keyboard for Cloud Gaming. This feature, currently in beta, is accessible on web browsers such as Edge or Chrome and can also be accessed via the Xbox app on PC.

The launch of the Proteus Controller and the updates to the Xbox Adaptive Controller marks a significant stride in inclusive gaming. These advancements ensure that the evolution and expansion of the world of video games continue to be accessible and enjoyable for all players. Looking ahead to the future of gaming, it is encouraging to see industry leaders like Xbox prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that no gamer is excluded.
