Fasting on Arafah, also known as the fast of the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, is a fast observed on the 9th day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar. This fast holds special significance and virtues as it falls on the day of Wuquf (standing) at Arafah, which is one of the main rituals of the Hajj pilgrimage.

Here is some information about fasting on Arafah:

  1. Date of observance: Fasting on Arafah is observed on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, which is one day before the celebration of Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice). This means that the fast coincides with the final day of the Hajj pilgrimage when pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafah and engage in worship by standing there from Dhuhr (noon) until sunset.
  2. Virtues: Fasting on Arafah holds great virtues in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that fasting on the day of Arafah can expiate sins of the past and the coming year. This fast is also considered an opportunity to seek forgiveness from Allah, enhance worship, and draw closer to Him.
  3. Sunnah fasting: Fasting on Arafah is not obligatory for those who are not performing the Hajj pilgrimage. However, it is highly recommended as a voluntary fast (sunnah). For those who are not in Makkah to perform Hajj, observing the fast of Arafah is a way to attain the same virtues and rewards as the Hajj pilgrims.
  4. Fasting in unison with the pilgrims: One of the unique aspects of fasting on Arafah is that Muslims worldwide fast in unison with the Hajj pilgrims who are engaged in the standing at Arafah. This creates a spiritual connection and fraternity among Muslims as they collectively raise supplications and engage in worship on the same day.

The practice of fasting on Arafah and its virtues are part of the teachings of Islam that can be followed by Muslims to seek blessings and rewards from Allah SWT.
