It always creeps up at the most inconvenient times. No matter how stressed you are or how desperately you need to escape, a reading slump will set in. I myself have been suffering one for over two months now, and let me tell you: it is not pretty.

To alleviate this pain I have curated a list of five romance books to get you back on the wagon. The romance genre is the best pick for this task due to their fast pace and simple plot lines. Plus who doesn’t love unrealistic expectations?

5. Love at First Spite

Love at First Spite by Anna E. Collins

Making number five on this list is Love at First Spite by Anna E. Collins. I picked this book up from an indie bookstore while on vacation and it was worth every penny.

The author builds an interesting story from the get-go with her opening image being on our main character playing paintball in her wedding dress. After finding out her (ex)fiancé cheated on her with their real-estate agent, Dani is keen to get back at the guy who broke her heart. Her solution? To build a bed and breakfast, perfect for a girls get-away, that will ruin his view and his life. Turns out her ex isn’t her biggest problem, trying not to fall in love with her co-worker and architect is. But that shouldn’t be an issue, right?

4. I Hate You More

I Hate You More by Lucy Gilmore

I Hate You More by Lucy Gilmore is small but mighty. It’s page count clocks in just below 300 pages, making this romance a bite sized read. Plus, if you are looking for a book on the ‘spicier’ side, this one has you covered.

Retired pageant girl turned retirement-home nurse, Ruby, has absolutely no plan to set foot on any type of stage ever again. Until she is not-so-subtly guilted into showing an overweight, lazy, and less than pedigreed golden retriever in a local dog show by one of her residents. But if she’s going to do this, she is going to do it right. And there is no way she is going to give into the handsome vet who was all too quick to pass judgement on her. No, whatever happens it will be on her terms.

3. The Love Hypothesis

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

If you thought this book wouldn’t make it on here, you thought wrong. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood is one novel that took book-tok by storm. With the perfect mix of tropes and originality this book has all the makings of a good rom-com to pull you up by your boot straps.

Ph.D. student Olive would have rather not blindly kissed a stranger. But in her defense, it was for her best friend’s happiness. Its not really an excuse, but its the one she has. To keep up the act Olive enlists said stranger to continue to be her fake boyfriend just long enough to let her friend settle into a happy relationship with a guy Olive used to date. Of course there is only one slight issue: her new “boyfriend” is renowned professor and hard-ass Adam Carlson.

2. The Deal

The Deal by Elle Kennedy

Sometimes what you need to get you out of slump is less plot, more spice. If that’s the case, then The Deal by Elle Kennedy (or any Elle Kennedy book) is for you.

At Briar University hockey rules, but that doesn’t mean the athletes are any less responsible for their grades. To keep his spot on the team and pursue his professional dreams Garrett Graham is going to have to go to the only person who is doing well enough in his philosophy class to give him a fighting chance: Hannah Wells. He clearly underestimated just how much her tutoring would cost him. But spending almost every night with a smart and gorgeous girl will be no problem for this player.

1. Mr. Wrong Number

Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter

I cannot sing my praises enough for Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter. Having read many books in my life (especially of the romance variety), I can truly say that this is one of the best that I have ever read.

Olivia is a train wreck to say the least and it seems that her bad luck is never too far behind. From flooding her freshman dorm to eventually burning down her apartment building, which leaves her on an uncomfortable air mattress in her brother’s apartment. It seems everyone around her thinks its high time the girl got her life together, including her brother’s roommate Collin who rudely interrupted her crying session and wants her out. Luckily Olivia has an anonymous texter to distract her from her crumbling life and even Collin who seems to have taken more interest in his roommate’s little sister than anyone could have expected.
