A red kite glides beneath the clouds,
a dagger of brown with a bolt of gold.
I open the blinds and spot one of its striped feathers;
I’m sure the cats can’t wait to run after it,
savoring the scent of bird—
those squeamish predators!
I pick up the feather like it belonged to a fallen angel,
as the kite peacefully continues its reconnaissance,
flapping far above my head.
In that moment, crows emerge from their dark caves.
Their dissonant barks fill the air,
like postmen carrying letters of fallen soldiers;
like officers setting mountains of books on fire.
The crows chase the red kite—
Quick!
The kite flies in zigzags to confuse the enemy,
but through their cacophony they come up with a plan
and they encircle the kite, fenced
from the left, right, above, below!
And the crow with the largest beak attacks the trapped kite.
“This is our territory!”
“The food here belongs us!”
“Get away, you filthy rat!”
I spot blood raining from the sky as the kite
attempts to fight back—
but to no avail.
A wound to the wing becomes fatal,
and the kite collides hard with the ground.
Helplessly, it straddles on the ground,
screaming in pain before it droops dead,
like an old rag,
like a dying rose.
The crows fly away to tend to their wounds,
as the fallen angel’s glassy eyes stare up at the kingdom it so loved.
I wonder what its last thought may have been;
perhaps
perhaps not
“The sky has no owner; it’s as free as our wings, yet the ability to fly made us want to conquer what never should have been ours in the first place. After all, nature was made without any borders.”
