Come and follow me on a journey where I made a 15km trek into a 25km trek and upon doing so found out some pretty interesting things along the way that can significantly change your life! Interested? Well then read on.
Treks are great and not done often enough! We have so many different treks around Perth that are suited to any ability and fitness level so why don’t more people get out there and get immersed in nature? Well, I decided enough is enough! I had to get out there! I have been trekking over the last couple of weekends to different sites just out of Perth and have found the benefits to my health and happiness OVERWHELMING!
This week I went to Eagle View Walk Trail in the John Forrest National Park. This is only half an hour outside of Perth and offers a GREAT trek with stunning views of the true Aussie outback. The trek itself is only 15km, however I managed to use my extraordinary trekking powers to trans-mutate the journey into 25km…how? Well the answer is simple, get lost a bunch of times and end up taking the many off-trek alternatives throughout the hike that eventually loop back to your original destination. Simple. Haha but I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it! Getting lost in the wilderness is great fun (contradicts popular belief doesn’t it), but I guess I’m not your ‘average’ kind of trekker. When we are so caught up on “getting to the right path” or “getting the job done” we often forget about having fun! That’s what its all about! Just go out there and enjoy the trek, and it doesn’t matter if you actually end up enjoying many, many different treks (as Idid), as long as you take the time to actually take in the wonder around you.
This may sound slightly cliché however there has been a lot of study done into mindfulness and living in the moment. When people get too worked up on the end goal then they often miss the magic that happens on the journey. I was more often than not off the trek than on it, but by taking the chance and going left instead of right I also got to see so many amazing things that I may have missed had I stayed on course. And yes if I have simply kept to the original track I may have done it in a lot less time, but was that the goal — go out there, keep the trail and get it done quick? Well maybe that is some people’s mission but it was not mine.
Trekking for me is about actually being able to truly live in the moment. The one time I don’t have to worry about what’s going on in the “real world”, don’t have to check my phone or facebook or emails. I just slow down and enjoy when that butterfly lands on my shoulder or the beautiful flying dace of two stunning rainbow cockatoos in the treetops or even just listening to the quiet creaking of the trees as they bend in the wind. Focusing on these things brings me back to “now” and how lucky I am that I am able to witness such beauty and peace in my own backyard. There is nothing that can make you happier quicker than gratitude. This is not just my opinion, it is a proven fact! If you don’t believe me then try it, next time you are feeling a little down think of all the things you are grateful for. You will instantly be able to feel your energy lift, this happens when we are “living in the moment”, we can simply be happy for that moment and we can raise our vibrations to an extraordinary level through this technique.
Another thing to remember is that we are MEANT to be outside. We live in concrete jungles now and often we spend only 5% of our day outdoors. We get up in our brick houses and get into our metal cars and go to our closed in office and get back in our metal cars (maybe go to a concrete gym) and go back to our brick houses in time for bed, then repeat. Now think back over our long history as a species; for 200, 000 years how often did we spend outdoors? 99% of the time!! The only time we would be inside would be overnight in a cave for shelter, however once we were up we were out hunting, gathering and socialising. We literally lived off the land and were a part of it.
Today we have forgotten our connection with our earth and spend most of our time surrounded by steal, bricks, concrete and synthetics. After an evolutionary lifetime outside what is this disconnect doing to us as a species?
We know that our rates of disease and depression are sky high and, even though we are living longer, I ask, are we living better? There are so many studies showing that a person can reduce their antidepressant medication simply by spending more time in nature! Also healing times can be significantly reduced in hospital patients if patients can simply SEE out into nature. We also know that getting outdoors can reduce stress, increase the immune system, improves focus and much, much more!! If you want proof then check out the massive list of references below!
How often do you touch nature? I mean actually feel the dirt under your skin or stroke the bark of an oak tree or feel the sun glistening on your face. The truth is that most people NEVER touch nature on a daily basis and if they do its only for a second and even then if they manage to get outside at all they are often covered up in chemicals and sunscreens or makeup to make sure that sunlight, the powerful energy that can elevate mood and reduce disease, is only minimally experienced. But why? How have we allowed this to be the norm? Well I say raise your standards! Start to make the decisions that will change your life in profound ways and all you have to do is stop and enjoy yourself! Now that’s not that hard.
Go and take a walk in a park or get your shoes off and run on the beach, feel the sand in your toes. And for god’s sake go out and experience the sunshine!!! Lets stop getting so paranoid about the “damage of the sun” and actually start getting the benefits from it that we have been getting our entire species existence! For every person that takes a vitamin D tablet (and the stats are that there are literally thousands of patients on them in Australia, which is ridiculous), for ever person who puts a tonne of chemical sunscreen all over their biggest organ to be absorbed into their blood (skin is the biggest organ of your body) you should be thinking what THESE things are doing to your body! The sun has ALWAYS been here for our entire existence! Pills and chemicals have only been around for a blink of an eye in our evolution. I trust nature! And I hope you start to trust and utilise her also. Get outside and get back to your roots. Lets start living the life we were born to live, a life infused with nature, peace and happiness.
