Heart disease is a major health concern for many people, and cholesterol is a major risk factor for developing it. Cholesterol levels can be managed with lifestyle changes, drugs, and nutrition.

You can improve your health by lowering your cholesterol levels. Many drugs are available. Doctors prescribe drugs called statins to reduce cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease. One such drug is 40mg Simvastatin.

Cholesterol and heart disease

When there is too much blood cholesterol, it builds up in the arterial walls. It causes heart disease. The arteries get narrowed. So blood flow to the heart muscles gets slowed or blocked.

As the blood carries oxygen to the heart if not enough blood and oxygen reach your heart, you may experience chest pain. You will suffer from a heart attack if the blood supply to a portion of your heart is completely cut off by a blockage.

Symptoms of high cholesterol:

High cholesterol does not cause any symptoms. So a lot of people are not aware that their cholesterol levels are too high. So it is important to find out what is your cholesterol level.

Lowering very high cholesterol levels lessens the risk of developing heart disease. It lowers the chance of a heart attack or dying of heart disease, even if you already have it.

Treatment of high cholesterol:

The main aim of treating high cholesterol is lowering your LDL levels and lowering your risk of having a cardiovascular disease.

If you wish to lower your cholesterol, include a diet that is heart-healthy, daily exercise, and keep a check on your weight. Some may need to take drugs to lower cholesterol such as 40mg Simvastatin.

Your doctor will determine your goal to lower LDL or bad cholesterol based on the number of risk factors you have for heart disease. Based on your risk your doctor will find out the intensity of LDL reduction you require and accordingly will prescribe a drug.

About Statins

Cholesterol-lowering drugs include statins. It is the most effective when taken along with a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.

Statins themselves block the cholesterol production in the liver. They reduce LDL along with triglycerides. They have a mild impact in increasing HDL. Such drugs are the first line of treatment for a lot of people having high cholesterol. One such effective statin is 40mg Simvastatin.

This drug works and blocks an enzyme called HMG-CoA-reductase. It is required in the body for making cholesterol. Thus it reduces LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides. It raises the level of LDL or good cholesterol.

How does 40mg Simvastatin treat cholesterol and cardiovascular disease?

This drug works and lowers the amount of LDL or bad cholesterol. It raises the amount of HDL or good cholesterol in the blood. Reducing the amount of cholesterol lowers the chances of heart disease. It helps you remain healthier for a longer time.

If you take 40mg Simvastatin on a regular basis and make suitable lifestyle changes like staying active and eating healthy, it will maximize the effectiveness of this drug. You must continue using it even if you feel better.

High cholesterol levels can cause your vessels to become narrow. It can put you at risk of having heart disease or stroke. Reducing the amount of this fat lowers the chances of it happening. You should not stop using 40mg Simvastatin without asking your doctor.

Should you be on statins?

Depending on your cholesterol levels and other cardiovascular disease risk factor, your doctor will decide if you need to be on a statin. He will consider all of your risk factors such as strokes and heart attacks before recommending a statin such as 40mg Simvastatin.

The most vital thing that your doctor will keep in mind when prescribing this treatment is your long-term risk of a stroke or heart attack. If you are at low risk, he probably would not ask you to take a statin. If you are having a very high risk such as if in the past you had a heart attack then a statin may help even if you do not have high cholesterol.

Not everyone with a heart condition needs to take a statin. There are a few people who may be helped by this group of drugs:

  • People, who do not have blood vessel or heart disease, but have one or more risk factors of cardiovascular disease and a higher 10-year heart attack risk. These people have diabetes, and high blood pressure or cholesterol. They are people who smoke. Their 10-year risk of a heart attack is 10 % or more.
  • People who already have a cardiovascular disease related to arteries hardening. These are people who have had strokes caused by blood vessel blockages, heart attacks, mini-strokes, prior surgery to open or replace coronary arteries, or peripheral artery disease.
  • People who have very high bad or LDL cholesterol. These are adults having 190mg/dL or higher cholesterol levels.
  • People who have diabetes. These are adults aged 40–75 who have diabetes and an LDL or bad cholesterol between 70 and 189 mg/dL, mainly if they have evidence of blood vessel disease or other heart disease risk factors like smoking or high blood pressure.

Usually, low-to-moderate dosages of 40mg Simvastatin are recommended in adults aged 40–75 years who have one or more risk factors for blood vessel or heart disease and at least a one in ten chance of having a cardiovascular disease event in the coming ten years.

Consider a statin to be a lifetime commitment

If your cholesterol level reduces, you may think that you do not require taking a statin anymore. But if 40mg Simvastatin helped reduce your cholesterol, you will likely require staying on it long term. Thus you can keep the level of your cholesterol down. Inform your doctor if you make any major changes to your diet or lose weight. Then he may guide you to control your cholesterol without a drug.
