So the American Bar Association wants to ban “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines” yet admits there’s not enough research to say whether the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban has had any effect whatsoever on firearm-related injuries.

If this call to action were truly “free of political influence and restriction” as they say, then I expect the American Bar Association to provide evidence that restricting magazine capacity would do anything statistically to combat “firearm violence.”

The truth is that almost 2/3 of firearm violence in the US is suicide. That’s right, self-afflicted violence that usually only takes one single bullet.

The truth is most firearm-related injuries are from handguns, not rifles (whether old-school brown ones or scary-looking black ones).

The truth is the American Bar Association’s call to action is as blatantly political as you could get and, I would argue, socially irresponsible. If they wanted to truly make an impact in the number of firearm-related deaths they would take up the mantle to address the suicide rate in the US.
