A casual Sunday morning
It was 9:30 am on a Sunday morning. Alarm sound. Ben quickly got up and got dressed. It was a nice day for him. he would go play tennis with his mate not far away from home on a public court. Scarlett was still sleeping. It was too early for her to wake up anyway on a no-plan Sunday morning.
Walked downstairs, Ben put 2 slices of Broiche bread in the toast. It was his favorite bread in US. Ben grew up in China, where there was a lot of soft milky Asian bread available. Normally available US bread like sourdough was just not to his taste. He got himself some instant coffee. If Scarlett was up, he could have some freshly ground espresso. But it didn’t matter for Ben anyway. He just needed some extra shot of energy. It’s been a hard week of work, and Ben never felt he could totally rest on weekend. There was always unfinished work left for him to catch up on. But he just didn’t want to think about it at the moment.
Ben is a software engineer in Meeta, one of the best big companies for young man like him to achieve their ambitions in the industry, also known for high peer pressure. Ben is a rock star employee in the company, thanks to his diligence and aggressive working style. Leadership liked him, and colleague respected him as a tech lead. He is happy to be in this position, even if it means sacrificing chilling movie and date night with his wife.
Ben and Scarlett met each other in graduate school, where they were both young and had nothing to worry about. They would grab coffee and go to the library together, go hiking and shopping on weekends, and watch some tv series together after homework before bed. Life was peaceful and happy, each moment they were together were sweet and relaxing. Even walking to the grocery market together on a Saturday afternoon holding hands was romantic and full-filling.
They’ve been working for almost 5 years now, during which they got happily married, bought a decent house and car, and Scarlett is currently pregnant with her first baby. They are still in love, but life is just not as dreamy as before. Work is on their mind all the time. They need to think of a way to get mentally relaxed.
Scarlett is also in Meeta, same level as Ben. Scarlett had been a bright and top-ranking student in class. She landed the job without much effort, and can deliver good results if she tries hard. But as time went by, she doesn’t like being a software engineer anymore. She was always dreaming of some other occupations she could have taken which would make her happier — You Tuber, Photographer, writer, or even housewife, which she never thought of when she was a teenager. For some reason, she was just so tired of her job, and got depressed whenever thinking about them. She had zero motivation every morning when waking up. This is strange for her as she has always been a motivated student at a younger age. She needed some change, but not sure where to start. Before each holiday and weekend break, she would think it’s a good time to start filming some videos, writing some blogs, or practicing some pianos. But break ends fast and she never got around finishing those.
Ben left home for his tennis date. Scarlett got up, got dressed in a hoodie, and made herself some latte art- it was a hobby she picked up when they started work from home due to Covid. She thought she would like to own a coffee shop and being a barista some day. But after making espresso, latte and whatever coffee drinks for a year, the original passion is gone and now what’s left is just habit.
Holding the coffee, Scarlett went to the study room. She finally had some time to do some thinking and writing. She had always wanted to do that, but for some reason, there was never a chance.
There, on a casual Sunday morning, finally without any disturbance, Scarlett started her first essay since teenage years..
