The Castle in Olesko: one of the medieval fortresses in Ukraine

Castles may be one of the last things coming to your mind when speaking about Ukraine. But our country has many unique castles. Of course, not all of them are well-preserved. However, several in good condition and attracted many tourists before the Russian full-scale invasion.

Olesko Castle in Lviv region: the pearl of Ukrainian medieval architecture

We don’t know when exactly the castle was built. One of the first mentions of the Olesko castle was by 1327 year when Yurii II (1298–1340) owned this fortress.

After Galychyna (historical region of Ukraine, marked with yellow on the map. Biggest cities are Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil) became a part of the Kingdom of Poland during the reign of Casimir III the Great (1310–1370), a long period of confrontation started. Poles. Lithuanians and Hungarians were fighting to gain control over the castle.

Finally, in 1441 Polish nobleman Yan from Senno became a roller of the castle. His descendants became known as Olesski (Those who are from Olesko)

For many years the castle was divided into two parts and owned by different noble families.

At the beginning of the XVII ct. the castle was owned by Ivan Danylovych Mykhailo Khmel (father of Bogdan Khmelnitskiy) served him among others less noble and wealthy and has no castle or even a manor.

Castle suffered a lot during the First World War and the Second World War. Another catastrophe was a wildfire in the 1950th year.

But thanks to the efforts of Andrii Shuliar (head of the architecture department of the Lviv region) the castle was recognized as an object under state protection and in 1958 reconstruction started.

Castle nowadays

Now the castle is the part of Lviv National Gallery of Arts named after B. Voznitskiy. The castle is far away from the main areas of ongoing battles now.

However Russian missile attacks are a significant threat to the Lviv region as well. Please, help the Ukrainian people to stop and repel the Russian invasion, to save our historical and cultural heritage.
