Be Accountable

I’ve been binging on self improvement books lately and I believe I’ve found a way that can truly help make a positive change to not only your life but the people you include in this excerise.

This isn’t necessarily something ground breaking but the knowledge has been pulled from books like “The Power of Habit”, “The Compound Effect”, and a number great books.

We all share the same end goal whether we know it or not.


Now how to attain that goal is radically different from person to person.

Our path to fulfilment is likely to change as we age and learn but the end goal will always stay the same.

Whether it means staying up all night preparing for a stock pitch or counting calories, reaching our goals is going to tough.

Have you ever found yourself just before bed promising you’re going to wake up early, hit the gym, get right to work, meditate, solve world hunger, and cook a healthy dinner. Then the next morning you wake up at 11 and completely forget to solve world hunger?

When we set personal goals we often never tell anyone and start to procrastinate or default on our goals.

Research shows that if we tell our friends and family about our goals we will feel accountable to reach them.

What I’m proposing you do (and you really should) is to bring together two or three of your friends and start a group.

Sit down or get on a call together and open up a Google Doc.

From there follow these steps:

  • Open up a Google Doc and invite your friends to it.
  • Write down ONLY TWO goals you see yourself accomplishing in the next month (we’ll go into more detail about this)
  • Re-read your goals and your friends goals to make sure they are VERY SIMPLE. Make sure that they are attainable in a month and are relatively different from each other. I suggest by having one career focused goal and one health/fitness focused goal
  • Now start by breaking your goals into the SMALLEST, most MEASURABLE goals. For example, if your goal was to start running each morning, mention that you’re going to wake up at 8 AM, that you’ll be out of the house by 8:30 and that you’re going to run at least 2 KM every weekday.
  • Next set a date for you guys to meet. I meet with my group two times a week (Wednesday and Sunday). Sundays are great so you can discuss how your week went. These meetings should not take more than 10 minutes and you should be talking about everyone’s goals and whether or not they need to be adjusted.
  • One of you is going to need to motivate everyone. After the first burst of energy people are going to start slacking, make sure you’re asking them about the commitments they made and checking in.

Make sure the structure of your goals is similar to mine. Also my goals are a lot longer term but I made sure I broke them down a lot further.

The main point from the book “The Compound Effect” is that if we commit to a small positive change in our life, just like compound interest, in the long run we will see massive change.

I’m not huge on motivational quotes but this one resonates with me.

Day one or one day. You decide.

See if you’ve gotten this far then you need to know that’s the reality. So stop what you were doing (it obviously not that important if you’re reading this) and message two of your friends.

Make this a day you look back to and say “this is where it all begun.
