Palm-lined streets brought a touch of exotic North Africa. There are seaside promenades and cafes that spill their customers and delicious smells onto the pavements.

Swakopmund is a favourite destination for the fishing is good and the climate is mild. The cold South Atlantic Sea wafted cool breezes over the baking dunes.

There were opportunities to go for breakfast in a hot air balloon, or quad biking in the dunes but we were distracted by the scents of German cuisine. After a hearty lunch we drove the short distance to Walvis Bay.
