In spite of the progress science has made in discovering what is good for humans, marketing is actually making people dumber by slowing this progress and holding strongly to outdated beliefs (milk is good for your bones, low-fat is better, you need powerful computers not smarter software, etc.)
Because of the amount of resources spent on “educating” people to belief some products are healthy and and necessary, scientific research and academic education can’t possibly match this hurricane of “small white lies” advertisements.
I don’t think it is called free will anymore, when the balance of powers is not equal. We are not controlled, but we are highly influenced. Not only that, but our brain is constantly bombarded with conflicting notions, crippling our productivity and ability to focus on the important things in life.
