4. OPENING CASE

4. Write a short paper based on the chapter’s opening case. Answer the following questions (Information Technology Project Management, 7e, page 140, Opening Case):

a. What do you think the real problem was in this case?

· Nick Carson seemed to ignore a key stakeholder for the DNA-sequencing instrument project — his top management.

· Nick was comfortable working with other members of the project team, but he was not familiar with his new job as project manager or the needs of the company’s top management.

· He mistakenly thought project integration management meant software integration management and focused on the project’s technical problems.

· He totally ignored what project integration management is really about — integrating the work of all of the people involved in the project by focusing on good communication and relationship management.

b. Does the case present a realistic scenario? Why or why not?

· Yes, we all have skill and also Nick Carson, we applied our skills based on what we experience, skill and abilities.

c. Was Nick Carson a good project manager? Why or why not?

· No, he had no experience or real interest in many of the company’s business aspects.

d. What should top management have done to help Nick?

· To make good project manager to Nick, the top management should give him more ideas and more train to be a good manager.

e. What could Nick have done to be a better project manager?

· Nick should use holistic or systems thinking and must integrate the work of the project with the ongoing operations of the organization.

· Integrating the work of all of the people involved in the project by focusing on good communication and relationship management. Recall that project management is applying knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to meet project requirements, while also meeting or exceeding stakeholder needs and expectations.
