Love your thoughts on writing instruction here. I wonder too about how traditional academic writing tasks stifle teens’ writing potential and passion. Why are we still asking students to write formal argumentative essays or 10–page research papers in school? The fact is our students are reading and writing all day. It’s just that their tweets, comments, texts and the like are so far removed from the rigidly structured formal essays we ask them to write in school. But I’d argue the latter is at least as far removed from the types of writing the vast majority of them will need to do to be successful in their future careers as are the former examples. We need to rethink the expected product as well as the process.
