Review: First I want to say I am an old guy from Mississippi, we are famous in the south for fried chicken, BBQ, and obesity.
I used to sport 250 lbs on a 5'10" frame and it was killing me. Doctors were not the answer, they are obese too and all they had for me was pills and potions, what I needed was a life style change. Being sick and tired of being sick and tired I decided to clean up my act. Folks food is what is killing us, really good, rich food loaded with sauces, gravy’s and cheese everywhere. I chose to eat to live as apposed to living to eat my only rule is the food has to be good, if it ain’t good it ain’t worth cookin.
What I like about this book:
Maangchi is a Korean mom not a professional chef (although moms are professionals) professional chefs will have you going done all sorts of rabbit holes, moms don’t have time for that, they have to get good food on the table for the people they love most in a timely manner. Moms know how to “get er done”.
I work so I don’t have time to play around either I need healty food quick and easy for cheap and it’s gotta be good. This book fits that bill.
I have cooked soups, stews, sides, and love it all, I can control the spice to my preference (I like it spicy) I can control the sodium. Eat the kimchi and throw your probiotics away. Kimchi stew is delicious.
Most of the recipes are low fat low calorie healthy foods.
If you think you might like Korean food or know you like Korean food and want to try your hand cooking some in your home, let a Korean mom be your guide, she will show you how to do it cheap and easy.
I don’t get anything for this review, my opinion is not jaded with profit or gain, that’s my story and I’m stickin to it.

Review: I own sixteen Korean cookbooks.. most of which are older with no photos but have those one or two great recipes and is the reason they hold their spot on my shelf.

But after just a week with this book. Im positive im going to sell off most of the others.

Pros:
This book has Color Pictures on every page.
This book covers every ingredient you would need in detail with photos of what that looks like!
This book covers every type of course you may be planning.

Cons:
I really am struggling here.. So far I have no real Cons.

Would I recommend this book?
Absolutely. Its massive and in the past ive bought the Bible of… books and this book would absolutely win hands down compared to many of those.

Review: Her first book is probably better. This just has a buncha variations of the same dish, and many of which are already in the first book, so it just seems like a lazy remake. I’m guessing this is to help beef up its size of the book to make it attractive, but it’s still missing recipes. 깐풍기 (spicy garlic fried chicken) is one that’s absent yet again and only available on her YouTube. Not a bad book but I guess authors put flaws in their book so you come back and buy the 2nd or 3rd one but I’m not falling for it again.

Review: I’ve bought cookbooks where the Kindle version is terrible. For those looking to purchase the Kindle version, I am happy to report that this cookbook is actually pretty easy to use. I’ve been using the Kindle App on my iPhone and the desktop version for my PC. Now, for the actual cookbook, this is the largest Korean cookbook I’ve seen. Between this new cookbook and her previous one you will find all the Korean recipes you will ever need. There are no fancy fusion recipes unlike other authors, just the traditional Korean recipes.

The only negatives I saw were there aren’t that many pictures in the Kindle version. Also, I wish there were some Instant Pot recipes but I can easily convert some of these recipes to work in Instant Pot.

Review: Maangchi’s first book is one of my most used books. We became fans of Korean cooking when we lived in Korea for 3 years. Coming back to the states there weren’t a lot of Korean cookbooks back then (late 90s) the surge of Korean offerings has been wonderful, some better than others.

One of the most helpful parts of this book are pages 18–35, ingredient explanations, and pictures! so you can snap a picture of what you want to buy with your phone, go into a Market, and compare items on the shelf, or show a worker to get help.

The recipes are laid out with an introduction to the recipe, ingredients, and directions. there are wonderful pictures of finished recipes and sometimes techniques.

Some ingredients you will need an Oriental market and possibly the internet. We are blessed in new orleans with wonderful markets but it can be a bit challenging elsewhere.

We get toasted Gim (nori, seaweed) and it’s expensive, but the basic sheets are cheap. The recipe for toasting these is wonderful. I’m not the biggest fan of fish cakes, but my husband gets them, he likes to just pan fry them. the stir fried fish cake recipe (page 248) gave me a reason to like them too. It elevated them from squishy funny tasting bland frozen globs to a really tasty dish.

Her seafood scallion pancake is just like what we’d get from vendors on the streets of pusan (or busan, depends on the map) so good. And what could be easier, or tastier, than garlicky cooked soybean sprouts? crispy pop in your mouth sprouts with wonderful garlic flavor.

I have a couple of favorite korean cookbooks, and more than a few I donated after trying a few recipes. This one will be my kitchen companion and become as stained and well loved as her first book.

Review: Great quality. I’ve made most of her recipes already but felt it was time to support her since she’s given me so much. Totally worth it regardless though.. the book is a true hardback and very coffee table worthy, heavy thick binding with vibrant colors and seriously thick pages. Very happy. Now I can get rid of most of these sloppy black and white print outs! Will probably use the couple recipes I like the aren’t in there as bookmarks. Problem solved!
