How sad (and lonely)

“Everything is work. Everything is work. Everything is work.”

What a dreary, utilitarian view of life that is. I love music. I’ve spent thousands of hours playing piano, guitar, bass, a little bit of drums, violin, and saxophone. The honest truth is have acquired some skill, but lack any real talent. Let’s just say no one will ever pay to hear me play.

In the course of my love affair, I’ve occasionally had the pleasure and the privilege of playing with real musicians, ones with tons of talent, some with the self discipline to burnish that talent with prodigious skill, some not so much. Am I jealous? A little. Would I, should I, ever stop loving/playing music? Absolutely not!

“…you are not meant to do what you love.”

There are so many sad sentences in this article that it reads more like a cry for help than a thoughtful exposition of a fulfilling and fruitful philosophy. I confess to also being somewhat perplexed by the decision to keep the comments hidden. I suspect you may have some skill and some success at writing, but that it is not something you love, or that makes you happy.

Have courage! It’s better to fail spectacularly at something you love than to succeed diligently at something you disdain!
